Kochi to Thekkady Taxi — Direct Cab to Periyar and Spice Country
Thekkady sits roughly 140 kilometres east of Kochi, tucked into the Western Ghats at the edge of the Periyar Tiger Reserve. The drive takes four to five hours depending on which route you take and how the traffic cooperates through the mid-range towns. It is a journey that moves from flat coastal plains through rubber estates into spice-scented hill terrain, and having a dependable driver who knows these roads changes the entire experience. Avancer Travel Solutions runs this route daily — our drivers know every curve, every bottleneck, and the best places to pull over when the views demand it.
Route Options: Kochi to Thekkady
There are two main routes from Kochi to Thekkady, and which one suits you depends on where you are starting from and what you want to see along the way.
Route 1: Via Kothamangalam and Adimali
This is the more scenic route and takes roughly four and a half hours. You pass through Kothamangalam, climb through Neriamangalam — where the road winds along the Periyar river gorge — then move through Adimali before turning south toward Thekkady. The stretch between Neriamangalam and Adimali is particularly striking, with dense forest on both sides and occasional views of the river valley below. This route is also the one you would take if you are combining Munnar and Thekkady in a single trip, since Adimali is the junction point.
Route 2: Via Muvattupuzha and Thodupuzha
A slightly shorter route that passes through the towns of Muvattupuzha and Thodupuzha before heading up into the hills via Peerumedu. This route has less dramatic scenery in the first half but is sometimes quicker when there is construction work or heavy traffic on the Kothamangalam road. The approach to Thekkady through Peerumedu is pleasant, with cardamom and pepper plantations on both sides.
Our drivers will suggest the best route based on the day's conditions. If you have a preference, let us know when booking.
What to Expect on the Drive
The first hour out of Kochi is typical Kerala lowland driving — coconut palms, paddy fields, small towns with their share of speed bumps. Once you start climbing after Kothamangalam or Thodupuzha, the road narrows and the hairpin bends begin. These are not as intense as the Munnar ghat roads, but they are genuine hill roads that need attentive driving.
Our vehicles are regularly serviced for hill-road readiness — brakes, tyres, and cooling systems are checked before every outstation trip. If you are prone to motion sickness, let your driver know. They will adjust their driving style and recommend the right stops.
Temperature changes are noticeable. You might leave Kochi at 32 degrees and arrive in Thekkady at 22 degrees. Carry a light jacket, especially if you are travelling between October and February.
Thekkady: What Awaits You
Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
The main reason most people visit Thekkady. The boat ride on Periyar Lake offers a genuine chance to spot wild elephants, gaur (Indian bison), and a variety of birds. Morning boats tend to have better wildlife sightings. Our driver can drop you at the boat jetty and wait while you complete the tour.
Spice Plantations
Thekkady is the heart of Kerala's spice trade. Guided walks through plantations let you see cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, clove, and vanilla growing in their natural state. Most plantations also have small shops where you can buy fresh spices directly — far better quality than what you find in tourist shops.
Bamboo Rafting and Nature Walks
For those wanting more than a boat ride, the Periyar Tiger Reserve offers bamboo rafting and guided nature walks that take you deeper into the forest. These need to be booked in advance through the reserve's office, and our team can help arrange them.
Kathakali and Kalaripayattu Performances
Thekkady town hosts nightly performances of Kathakali (classical dance-drama) and Kalaripayattu (martial art). These are genuine cultural experiences, not diluted tourist versions. Your driver will know the current show timings and venues.
Combining Thekkady with Munnar
Many travellers do Kochi-Munnar-Thekkady as a connected circuit. Munnar to Thekkady is about 90 kilometres, roughly three hours through some of Kerala's most beautiful hill terrain. If you are planning this route, we can arrange a multi-day cab that covers both destinations without the hassle of booking separate vehicles. See our Kochi to Munnar cab service for details on that leg of the journey.

Yes. We offer both one-way drops and round-trip bookings. One-way is a good option if you are continuing from Thekkady to Munnar or Alleppey rather than returning to Kochi.
The road is motorable year-round, though monsoon months (June-August) can bring heavy rain, reduced visibility, and occasional minor landslides on hill stretches. Our drivers are experienced in monsoon driving and will adjust speed and route accordingly. We avoid travel during red alerts issued by the weather department.
A light jacket or sweater (Thekkady evenings are cool), comfortable walking shoes for plantation visits, insect repellent, and a rain jacket if travelling during monsoon. Sunscreen is useful for the boat ride on Periyar Lake.
