Kochi to Alleppey Taxi — Your Ride to the Backwaters
Alleppey — or Alappuzha, as it's officially known — is just 55 kilometres south of Kochi, but it feels like a different world entirely. Where Kochi is urban and commercial, Alleppey is canals and coconut palms and houseboats drifting through quiet waterways. It's the kind of place people come to Kerala specifically to experience.
The drive takes about an hour and a half via NH66 in normal traffic. It's flat, straightforward, and scenic once you get past the Kochi suburbs. Avancer Travel Solutions has been running this route since we started operations in 2012 — it's one of our most frequent transfers, and we know exactly how to get you there comfortably and on time, whether you're catching a houseboat check-in or simply heading to the beach.
The Route: What to Expect
The Kochi to Alleppey drive is one of the easier routes in Kerala — no mountain passes, no hairpin bends, just a smooth coastal highway.
From Kochi to Aroor/Cherthala (about 30 km)
You'll head south from the city through the Kundannoor junction and across the Aroor bridge. This section can be slow during morning rush hours (8–10 AM), particularly around Vyttila and Kundannoor. Once past Aroor, traffic thins out.
Cherthala to Alleppey (about 25 km)
The road straightens out and the landscape opens up. Paddy fields, small churches, toddy shops, and the occasional glimpse of backwater canals alongside the road. This section is usually smooth and takes about 30–40 minutes.
Reaching Your Destination in Alleppey
Most travellers heading to Alleppey have one of these destinations:
- Finishing Point (Houseboat Terminal): This is where the majority of houseboat cruises depart from. We drop you right at the boarding area.
- Alleppey Beach: On the western edge of town, a wide sandy beach with a historic pier.
- Marari Beach: About 11 km north of Alleppey town, known for its quieter, resort-lined shoreline.
- Hotels and Homestays: Whether you're staying along the backwaters or in town, we'll get you to the doorstep.
Timing Your Trip for Houseboat Check-In
If you're booked on a houseboat — and that's the reason most people travel this route — timing matters. Houseboat check-in is typically at 12 noon, and check-out is at 9 AM the next morning.
Our recommendation: Leave Kochi by 10 AM for a comfortable, unhurried drive. This gives you buffer for any traffic near the city and ensures you reach the Finishing Point with time to settle in before the boat departs. If you're coming directly from Cochin Airport (which is further north), starting by 9 AM is wiser.
We can coordinate the pickup timing based on your houseboat operator's instructions. If your booking confirmation specifies a different check-in time, share it with us and we'll adjust.
Vehicle Options
For a 55 km ride, most vehicles will do the job comfortably. Your choice depends more on group size and luggage:
- Sedan (Dzire, Etios): Perfect for couples or a pair of travellers heading to a houseboat. Fits two medium suitcases in the boot easily.
- SUV (Innova, Crysta): Families with children, or groups of 4–5 with heavier luggage. The extra space is especially welcome if you're carrying supplies for the houseboat (some travellers bring their own provisions).
- Tempo Traveller: For group houseboat bookings or wedding parties heading to Alleppey. We transport groups regularly to the Finishing Point.
One-Way, Round Trip, or Multi-Stop?
One-Way Drop to Alleppey
The most common booking. We drive you from your Kochi hotel, guesthouse, or the airport to your Alleppey destination. The driver drops you off and returns.
Round Trip (Alleppey and Back)
If you're visiting Alleppey for the day — perhaps a backwater boat ride, lunch by the canal, and some time at the beach — a round trip with waiting time is practical. The driver stays, and you return to Kochi in the evening.
Multi-Destination Itinerary
Alleppey is often one stop in a larger Kerala trip. Kochi to Alleppey, then Alleppey to Thekkady or Kumarakom, and eventually back. We're well-equipped to plan multi-day, multi-stop itineraries with a single vehicle and driver. It's simpler, cheaper, and less stressful than rebooking at every stage.
What About the Return from Alleppey?
After your houseboat experience, you'll need a ride back. Check-out is usually at 9 AM, so we can have a car waiting at the Finishing Point right when you disembark. The return drive to Kochi follows the same NH66 route and typically takes an hour and a half.
If you're heading to the airport for a flight later that day, let us know your flight time and we'll plan the Alleppey pickup accordingly. We've done this coordination hundreds of times — houseboat to airport is practically a standard transfer for us.

Frequently Asked Questions
The fare depends on the vehicle type. A sedan is the most economical option, while an SUV costs a bit more. We provide exact, fixed fares at the time of booking — no meter-based uncertainty. Call or message us with your travel date and vehicle preference for a quote.
Yes. The Finishing Point in Alleppey is the main houseboat terminal, and our drivers are very familiar with it. We'll drop you at the boat boarding area, help with luggage, and ensure you connect with your houseboat operator. If your houseboat departs from a different point (some premium houseboats have private jetties), just share the location and we'll get you there.
The first 20 km through Kochi's suburbs are urban, but once you cross Aroor, the landscape shifts to paddy fields, coconut groves, and glimpses of backwater canals. It's a pleasant drive, especially with the windows down (or AC on, depending on the season). It's not dramatic like the Munnar ghat road, but it has its own quiet Kerala charm.
Let us know as soon as you find out. We'll adjust the pickup time from Kochi to match. Since this is a short route, even a last-minute change of an hour or two is usually easy to accommodate.
Absolutely. There are several good restaurants along NH66, particularly near Cherthala. Your driver can suggest a couple of reliable spots based on whether you're in the mood for a Kerala breakfast (appam, puttu, fish curry) or something lighter. A quick stop adds maybe 20–30 minutes to the total travel time.
